Ignazio Cassis is a member of the Swiss Federal Council coming from Ticino. He studied medicine 1987, received his master in 1987 and became a medical doctorate in 1998. In 2007 he was elected into the National Council in which he served for 10 years, until in 2017 he became a member of the Federal Council. In the Federal Council, Cassis is the head of the Federal Department for Foreign Affairs (FDFA). Being the only Federal Councilor from Ticino, as well as him being the head of the FDFA makes him a really valuable patron for the NSC Ticino 2023, which focuses on strengthening the ties between Ticino and the rest of Switzerland as well as Europe. We are incredibly honoured to be able to collaborate with Ignazio Cassis!
(EN) "Switzerland is founded on a plurality of cultures, languages, generations and mentalities.
The ability to listen and find shared solutions is the basis of our concordance-based political system and also defines our engagement abroad.
Initiatives like the EYP allow this spirit to live on and grow.
I thank you for your commitment and wish you an enriching experience of sharing in Italian-speaking Switzerland!"
Marco Romano has been in the National Council since 2011 for the Central Party with the main focus of his political career being on the connection in the Swiss political landscape. From 2004 to 2016 he was in the city council of Mendrisio, showing his dedication to both regional and national politics. Considering his political background and commitment to the same core values of Swiss unity and active local citizenship that are in the foreground of the NSC Ticino 2023, we are incredibly honoured to have him as one of our patrons!
"In a federal state, political participation lives mainly through the commitment of thousands of people in every corner of the country who are engaged in running local entities and institutional bodies of various kinds. This strengthens responsibility, freedom and concern for the common good. The exchange between young generations creates added value, innovation and a drive for participation. A push for a living democracy!"
Luisa Lambertini received her Laurea cum Laude in Bologna, pursued her masters degree in England and wrote her Ph.D. in Economics in California. Lambertini received full professorship at EPFL in 2009 and since the 1. July 2023 she became the rector of USI. Her academic research focuses on international finance and political economy, which couldn’t be more fitting for EYP. All of these points make her the perfect patron for our session, we are extremely honored to have her as a patron.
“By participating in political life and engaging in social activities, you shape your future. Your voices matter and your involvement ensures inclusive governance at all levels – university, cantonal, federal and international. Together, you can create positive change and at the same time develop valuable skills for your professional and personal life. Stay informed from several sources and form your own opinion, use your right to vote, commit to a cause, and make a difference.”
Mario Branda is the first socialist Mayor of a city in Ticino. From the moment he took office, he promoted collegiality, mutual respect and tolerance. He worked as a lawyer at the Appeals Service of the Council of State, then as head of the Guardianship Supervisory Office. In 2001 he became Public Prosecutor and in 2009 Deputy Attorney General at the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Canton of Ticino. Mario Branda is currently the Mayor of Bellinzona, one of the three cities where the NSC Ticino 2023 will take place. Considering the values he has promoted throughout his career and his social and political commitment in Ticino, we consider him an ideal patron for the Session.
"Telling democracy to the vast majority of us, Swiss - or Italians, or Germans, or…- , especially if millennials, is like telling us the air we breathe. We breathed it for our whole life, since we've been born, thus it sounds like a given, eternal. But, hey, it isn’t! All around the world populists and demagogues, among others, display us the vulnerabilities of our democratic systems. So this is something we should very much take care of, just like you will do these days. It’s important for you, it’s crucial for us today as it is for the quality and openness of our living together in the years to come."
Simona Genini, the first female president of GLRT, studied law and after finishing University began working at the Magistrate's Court in Bellinzona, at the Public Ministry in Lugano and at the Appeals Service of the Council of State in Bellinzona. She then started working in various offices at the Tax Division in Bellinzona. From 2016, she worked at Besfid SA and, after a few years, at the Veco Group. In February 2022, she founded SIGE Consulenza Sagl, based in Lugano. She teaches at SUPSI and at the Centre for Banking Studies.
We believe that she is an excellent patron because she particularly cares about the territory and traditions of Ticino, loves to meet with young people and discuss current issues, especially the ones regarding her sector.
(EN) "I am convinced that Switzerland and Ticino need, more than ever, the voice of young people as well. Only together with them will we be able to find the best solutions to build the society of the future, which will belong to them. Being active in politics means expressing our sense of responsibility. The duty each and every one of us has is to personally spend ourselves in the battles we believe in. Switzerland and Ticino need young people to make themselves available, in politics but especially in volunteer work. Our country's militia system offers every individual the opportunity to do something good for his fellow human beings, and thus for himself."
